Mammography

Annual screening mammograms are very important for breast health. Annual mammograms are recommended for women usually from the age of 40. The North Coast Bone Density and Breast Care Centre offers a Full Field Digital Mammogram machine for mammogram screening – one of only two in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Full Digital Mammogram has many benefits:

Excellent image clarity
Easier for detecting problems earlier
Enhanced Breast Comfort
particularly good for breasts with implants

Annual Mammography is recommended from the Age of 40, and early Detection is Key.

Mammography can identify an abnormal Mass as much as 2 years before it can be detected by touch. 80% of cases occur in woman over 50 years old.

On completion of the Mammogram your scan will be scrutinised:

On a five megapixel monitor
Image is enlarged onto two big monitors
Examined by a Radiographer
Our CAD – software that will pinpoint abnormalities on the screen
The images are then second read by another Radiologist
Images are stored digitally,and can be copied to a CD, if required

It is extremely important to check your own breasts on a regular basis. Once you get to know your own breasts, detecting any changes will be easier. So for instance, you’ll be alert to skin thickening, a mobile or immobile lump, pain, fever, retracted or weeping nipples and swelling.
